Richie Idels received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Florida in Gainesville where he was a member of the Gargole Honor Society. He continued to the Graduate School of Urban Design. under the leadership of renowned international architect and educator Professor Dr. Leonardo Ricci . Richies' studies included a semester in Venice Italy and went on to personally work in Ricci's private office in Florence Italy.
After leaving the university, Richie sailed across the Atlantic in a private Sail Boat Yacht, eventually arriving in Israel. There he worked in Tel Aviv for Yitzhak Perlstein well-known architect in Israel, the designer of the Shalom Tower, the highest building in the middle east at that time. On to Miami Beach, Richie was a designer in the office of the celebrated architect Morris Lapidus, architect of the Fountainblue Hotel amongst others.
A few years later, Richie returned to Israel to study in Yeshivat Ohr Somayach in Jerusalem. He eventually worked for the prominent religious architect in Israel, Yosef Schonberger architect of many Jewish institutional buildings including the Western Wall Plaza and surroundings after the 67 war.
Married in New York, the young couple chose to live in Israel, where their children were born . Richie opened his own office in Zichron Yakov. He designed numerous projects (see Israel Work - this website). Richie served in the IDF and was active in musical performance as a musician and band leader.
After a number of years, he was commissioned by the well-known philanthropist, Joseph Tanenbaum to come to Toronto to design the BAYT Synagogue in Thornhill, Ontario. Working together with Ben Schulz Architect, this Orthodox Synagogue building is reputed to be the largest of its kind in North America. Soon after its completion, Richie went on to design many homes and Jewish institutional structures of all kinds. Mikvah design is one of the firm's specialties with over 30 Mikveh projects of all kinds designed and built.
